I’ve written for fewer than 40 hours this month and wrote just a bit over 20,000 words. This is the least productive I’ve been since November of 2012, which was the month when I got my wisdom teeth out and was miserable for weeks on end. And before that, my last really unproductive stretch was January-April of 2011, when I’d quit my job and moved to CA and was learning how to work my schedule on my own. I am a bit sad, since this April ends an abnormally-productive stretch that’s lasted since September of 2013: a stretch that proved fairly robust even when subjected to conferences, the start of school, winter breaks, and various mood swings.
Just as in the case of November 2012, this month’s lack of productivity is due to factors outside of my control (illness, graduation, other assorted anxieties). I mean, that is not to say that I couldn’t have manned up and made a go of it. But (for very good reasons), the will simply wasn’t there.
It will be interesting to see how I manage when I don’t have school. I am fairly confident that I can get a fair amount done: after all, I’ve always been productive during breaks and during periods when I was non-traditionally employed. But it will certainly necessitate a certain amount of adjustment in my schedule. I expect that the biggest problem I’ll face (at least in the beginning) will be over-reach. It’s not uncommon for me to attempt to do too much and end up doing worse than my baseline.
